The  email is relatively small (24K) so it will not clog your inbox. Most of the information is on our web page, but this way the information comes to you.

HAWKS GARDEN TIPS FOR MAY:
 
Harden off indoor started seedlings for your garden. Move them outside each morning to a shaded, sheltered spot. Slowly increase time and light intensity.
 
Prune out winter damage on evergreen shrubs.
Apply second application of HAWKS lawn fertilization program.
Deadhead daffodils and tulips, do not cut off greens. Check for empty spots and make notes for fall.
Spray for Pine Sawfly larva, or call HAWKS Landscape Management department.
Set out annuals and vegetables as weather permits.
Apply liquid broadleaf weed killer to turf areas.
Check trees and shrubs for diseases.

May 3   10:00 am  Rain Gardens Surprisingly easy to create, rain gardens are an environmentally sensitive way to put stormwater runoff from your roof to productive use. May 3   1:00 pm  Groundcovers for Sun and Shade Groundcovers are often better than turf; they’re beautiful, require less care, and some varieties have lovely blossoms. Groundcovers are an attractive solution to a problem area! Garden walk included to view plants and learn their growth habits.

May 10   10:00 am  Flowering Trees and Shrubs Woody ornamentals can enhance the beauty of your landscape by bringing color, depth and year round interest to the garden. Learn about the many species available and how to choose the ones best suited to your site. Garden walk included.

May 10   1:00 pm  Growing the Best -Tasting Vegetables Nothing compares to the taste and quality of a vegetable picked and eaten within minutes! Heirloom vegetables and new gourmet hybrids are fun and easy to grow, even with little or no garden space! Class includes planting, cultivation, and key tips for success.

May 17   10:00 am  Introduction to Silk Floral Design Learn principles of color harmony and contrast while our designers demonstrate the use of  line and shape to create stunning arrangements.

May 24   10:00 am  Shady Characters - Perennials Discover colorful choices for woodland gardens and those challenging shady corners, from blooming perennials to elegant foliage plants. Learn from an expert shade gardener, and view actual plants at Hawks. Garden walk is included.

May 24   1:00 pm  Container Gardening II REPEAT of April class due to high demand. Learn how to choose annuals, grasses and even vegetables to create visual “punch” to accent your entryway, patio or garden. You’ll also get tips on how to set up simple ways to irrigate and fertilize.

May 31   10:00 am  Patio Tropicals The textures and colors of tender tropical plants add drama, glamour and surprise to the summer garden from early summer until frost. Learn how to effectively use them in the garden and in pots, and how to bring them in for the winter

May 31   1:00 pm  Perennials for Sun Bewildered by the vast array of perennials? Learn to make choices so you’ll have color from spring through fall, and get tips for planting, dividing and winter care. Garden walk included.
