APRIL  

April 5   10:00 am  Pruning Woody Ornamentals Learn how plant growth habits influence how and when to prune trees and shrubs. With the right knowledge, tools, and techniques your pruning will enhance the health and aesthetics of the woody ornamentals on your property.

April 5   1:00 pm  Lawns - Care and Feeding Is your lawn in need of a make over? Join us to learn proper lawn care practices to make - or keep - your lawn healthy.  This class will cover weed control, fertilization, mowing, renovation and more.

 

April 12   10:00am  Introduction to Landscape Design Learn how well-designed landscapes result in functional outdoor living spaces that add beauty and value. This class touches on basic design principles, the sequence of analysis, and decisions that can take your garden to a higher level - always fills!

April 12   1:00 pm  Spring-Planted Bulbs for Summer Glamour Tender bulbs planted in spring can easily add color and drama to your garden in the summer. From the familiar to the exotic, there is a wide variety of bulbs available for any type of garden.

 

April 19   10:00 am  Battling Bugs, Fungi, Weeds and Critters Something bugging you? Arm yourself with the knowledge to make informed choices regarding control measures, organic or otherwise.

April 19   1:00 pm  Orchids Are Easy! If you think growing elegant, long-blooming orchids is tricky, this class is for you!  Our seasoned enthusiast helps you learn how to choose plants, fertilize, re-pot and troubleshoot.

 

April 26   10:00 am  Container Gardens I Containers are versatile and add visual impact, especially with the many choices of annuals available. Get tips on creating a pleasing composition and how to water and fertilize. Since this class always fills we have a repeat available in May.

April 26   1:00 pm  Bird and Butterfly Gardening By selecting specific plants that provide food, shelter and a place to raise young, you can dramatically increase the number and variety of butterflies and birds in your yard. Our expert shares ideas on design and the best choices of perennials, annuals and woody ornamentals.

 

MAY

May 3   10:00 am  Rain Gardens Surprisingly easy to create, rain gardens are an environmentally sensitive way to put stormwater runoff from your roof to productive use. Learn how to design, calculate size, dig and choose plants for a flower garden that will collect excess water and enhance the beauty of your yard at the same time!

May 3   1:00 pm  Groundcovers for Sun and Shade Groundcovers are often better than turf; they’re beautiful, require less care, and some varieties have lovely blossoms. Groundcovers are an attractive solution to a problem area! Garden walk included to view plants and learn their growth habits.

 

May 10   10:00 am  Flowering Trees and Shrubs Woody ornamentals can enhance the beauty of your landscape by bringing color, depth and year round interest to the garden. Learn about the many species available and how to choose the ones best suited to your site. Garden walk included.

May 10   1:00 pm  Growing the Best -Tasting Vegetables Nothing compares to the taste and quality of a

vegetable picked and eaten within minutes! Heirloom vegetables and new gourmet hybrids are fun and easy to grow, even with little or no garden space! Class includes planting, cultivation, and key tips for success.

May 17   10:00 am  Introduction to Silk Floral Design Learn principles of color harmony and contrast while our designers demonstrate the use of  line and shape to create stunning arrangements.

 

May 24   10:00 am  Shady Characters - Perennials Discover colorful choices for woodland gardens and those challenging shady corners, from blooming perennials to elegant foliage plants. Learn from an expert shade gardener, and view actual plants at Hawks. Garden walk is included.

May 24   1:00 pm  Container Gardening II REPEAT of April class due to high demand. Learn how to choose annuals, grasses and even vegetables to create visual “punch” to accent your entryway, patio or garden. You’ll also get tips on how to set up simple ways to irrigate and fertilize.

 

May 31   10:00 am  Patio Tropicals The textures and colors of tender tropical plants add drama, glamour and surprise to the summer garden from early summer until frost. Learn how to effectively use them in the garden and in pots, and how to bring them in for the winter

May 31   1:00 pm  Perennials for Sun Bewildered by the vast array of perennials? Learn to make choices so you’ll have color from spring through fall, and get tips for planting, dividing and winter care. Garden walk included.

 

JUNE

June 7   10:00 am  Roses: Care and Feeding Think growing beautiful roses is a challenge? Our teacher and rose judge from the Milwaukee Rose Society will show you how easy it can be. Learn great information on types of roses, choosing the right ones for your needs, proper care, pruning and winter protection.

June 7   1:00 pm  Peonies - Fragrant and Flamboyant The scent and glamour of peonies is one of the high points of the early summer garden. Discover why! Learn about herbaceous peonies and tree peonies, different forms and colors, and proper cultivation and care for these long-lived plants.

 

June 14   10:00 am  Basic Landscape Design Principles A repeat of the April class due to high demand. Learn how well-designed landscapes result in functional outdoor living spaces that add beauty and value. This class touches on basic design principles, the sequence of analysis, and decisions that can take your garden to a higher level - always fills!

June 14   1:00 pm  Dazzling Daylilies The many colors and forms of these versatile perennials have equally varied uses in the landscape. Get tips and cultural advice from one of our Perennial Specialists, and examine the wide variety of cultivars Hawks carries in a Garden walk.

 

June 21   10:00 am  Perennial Grasses Add four-season interest to your landscape and learn how to choose and care for the best grasses for your site. Hawks is well-known regionally for our selection of perennial grasses - we carry over 50 varieties. Garden walk included.

June 21   1:00pm  Going Native Hardy, well-adapted and beautiful, native plants can be combined into lush plant communities that reward your senses and attract wildlife. Learn to choose the right plants to create specific “habitats.”

Fee is $5.00 per class. Sorry, no registration without payment. Payment holds your place in class. If you want to join Hawks University, please say so when you register.

In person - Come to the Garden Center a week or more in advance, sign up and pay at the checkout register.
