The Hawks Nursery Co., established in 1875, has been at its current location in Wauwatosa, WI (a suburb of Milwaukee) since 1923.  At the high point of the season, Hawks employs more than 175 people.  Hawks multi-level, state of the art facility includes:

·        Landscape Design & Construction - Our Landscape Architects and Designers are able to design and direct the installation of landscapes of any complexity. Our construction crews install over four million dollars in landscaping each year.

·        Landscape Maintenance - Our crews are experienced at handling all facets of landscape maintenance including fertilizations, bed care, turf management and technical tree and shrub care.

·        Garden Center - Our retail garden center is able to full-fill the needs of all gardening enthusiasts.  We carry a substantial variety of gardening gifts, tools and over 5,000 varieties of plant material.

·        Retail Landscape Design - This area of the company handles small to medium size landscape planning and installation sales as well as design and sales for our do-it-yourself clientele. 

·        Nursery - Hawks purchases all of its plant material from premier growers through out the country.  We handle over five million dollars worth of plants each year.  The nursery staff receives, maintains and assembles all plant orders for the design/build and retail departments.

Estimator 

Assembling computer-based estimates for landscape projects utilizing our Sage Mas 90 based estimating program.  Assist Landscape Architects and Designers in creating presentation packages.  General web site maintenance as well as communication with clients and the public. 

Qualifications: Strong word-processing skills and a basic knowledge of accounting software, spreadsheets and databases is needed.  The ability to work on and contribute to a team of motivated individuals is paramount.  Experience with landscape or general construction, knowledge of plant material and experience in web page construction is a plus.  This position first begins in summer 2009, a part-time position with flexible hours.

Tree and Shrub Sales, Retail

Assist retail customers in selecting and purchasing trees, shrubs, evergreens, perennials, and assorted garden products. Advise customers, verbally and through simple sketches, on where to place plants in their landscape. Maintain retail yard in an orderly manner, including restocking, plant pricing, labeling, watering, pruning, and monitoring insects and diseases.

Qualifications: Two year Horticulture degree or equivalent experience in woody plant identification and culture. Must be familiar with the characteristics and cultural requirements of the majority of plants which grow in this zone. The ability to communicate well with retail clients that require various levels of customer assistance. Flexibility in working store hours that must follow client demand. Punctuality and reliability is essential.

Annuals/Perennials Retail Sales

Assist retail customers with herbaceous ornamental purchases. Provide horticultural information. Assist customers with basic design ideas and alternatives. Planting container gardens, as well as maintain in stock plant material.

Qualifications: Basic knowledge of annuals and perennials required, and a willingness to learn the extensive variety of herbaceous ornamentals we carry. Applicants must be willing to give excellent service to our customers. The ability to provide plant care, including unloading trucks, grooming plants, and watering. Applicants must be able to lift heavy flats, and to work in all weather conditions. We require evenings and weekends, especially in May and June. Availability during any store hours is essential.

Head Cashier and Cashier

Duties will include cash handling, customer assistance, telephone call routing, and general store duties as assigned.

Qualifications: Experience preferred, but will train. Must be at least 16 years of age.

Carry Out

Loading vehicles, unload freight, setting up inventory in garden center along with a variety of other duties.

Qualifications: Must be at least 16 years of age, and must be able to consistently lift 50 pounds. Forklift or skid loader experience would be a plus, but will train.

Arborist

Full-time position for a climber in the arborist department. The individual must have the ability to apply standard tree and shrub pruning techniques with minimal or no supervision. Individual will be expected to learn required advanced techniques to prune or remove trees over obstacles and in hot or cold weather. Daily tasks will include working in trees to perform all general tree care (i.e. cabling, bracing, pruning and removals), having full knowledge of how all tree care equipment is used to complete work in the safest way possible (i.e. chainsaws, pole and hand saws, chipper, aerial lift, stump grinder), and effectively participating in all job safety briefings. One must always be aware of all hazards to ensure the work area is kept safe and be able to maintain all climbing gear and tree care equipment in safe working order to ensure safe, efficient and high quality tree care. Individual will also assist in removing debris, chipping  brush and cleaning up work site after each job.
